Ummm...Was That A Mailbox???

Just as you start to think things couldn’t get any worse…something else happens. On Saturday after we put the girls down for a nap, I decided to run a few errands. On my way home, our truck decided it would be fun to hit a mailbox. Yup, that’s what I said, a mailbox.

For those of you who don’t know, we got a layering of snow on Saturday. Nothing much, just enough to cover the ground. This made some of the roads a bit slick. As you come into our neighborhood, you make a little s-curve, and then head up a hill to our street. I know this s-curve can be slippery, so I slowed down, and then gave the truck a little gas as I started up the hill. As I gave it gas, the back end decided to slide out from under me. I tried to correct it, but couldn’t. And then in very slow motion, I saw the mailbox get closer and closer, until I saw it flying across the yard. I just sat there…not knowing what to do. No one was around and no one was coming out of the house.

I decided to head home, which was only a block away. After explaining to Chad what had happened, we contacted his mom (who handles our insurance) and then the police. The police showed up at our house with-in minutes, took my statement and started a case for us. We gave him our name and number to share with the people, so we can replace their mailbox.

The truck will need work…for sure. I barely felt the crash, I think I was more in shocked that it happened. All the places to crash into…there were open yards all over the place, but no I had to hit a mailbox!

Times like this remind me how lucky I am to have such a wonderful husband. He took this so well. Didn’t get mad, didn’t get upset. He’s the one that called his mom, the police, etc. He is the one getting the truck fixed and figuring out how we can replace the mailbox. And he gave me a huge hug and said, no big deal…at least you are okay. The deductible is a bit hard for both of us to swallow, but what can you do about that. No need to get upset or angry…life happens!!!

It’s been a very expensive month with Sydney’s ER visit, hospital stay and now this! Oh well, we are all healthy and happy, so all in all that is what really matters. They say things happen in 3’s…we’ll this is the third thing and hopefully the last for a LONG time!!!

What A Week...

I warn you this is a long blog, but I wanted to be detailed…

After our ER visit on Sunday, life got back to normal. We had a follow up appointment for Sydney on Wednesday with her primary Pediatrician, where they put her on antibiotics and asked us to come back on Saturday. So, Sydney and I headed back Saturday morning. At this appointment I had noticed the lump was larger, and so did the doctor. But she wanted to give the antibiotics a chance to work, so asked us to come back on Monday. So, again, Sydney and I headed back to see the doctor on Monday afternoon. Now the lump was much larger and turning red. The doctor didn’t like it at all, so she called Children’s in Minneapolis and told us to head up there.

Okay, so here is the situation. I’m like, what about Kendall. So I call my mom and she is willing to take care of Kendall for us. I ask if she can meet me at our house and bring Sydney and I up to the hospital, knowing Chad can come get us. This way I know she has a car with car seats. The doctor did warn me that they may admit her and that she may need surgery. So I quickly run in the house and put together a few clothes and other items…just in case we do spend the night. We get to Children’s in Minneapolis, where my mom drops us off and we proceed into the ER. They see us right away, but then we wait FOREVER in the room. Didn’t I just say in my last blog that I hope we never visit an ER again…well I guess I was wrong. Chad finally meets us there, where we are told she will be admitted and put on IV antibiotics. But here’s the catch, they don’t have a room for us. So we get to wait in the ER until a room opens…3 hours later, we finally get a room. Poor Sydney has been looked at from about 10 different people, she is so tired from crying each time she was touched or poked. When we finally get to the room, I’m able to get her settled down for bed. Then over a 3 hour period, she is constantly woken up, so a variety of doctors (from interns to residents to staff) can review her case. I think it was about mid-night when the visits stopped and we were both able to fall asleep…until we were woken by the surgeon at 6am.

At this point the surgeon said we could not do surgery as the lump was hard, which meant there was no fluid in there to drain. So she was to continue on IV antibiotics, receive no food (except clear liquids until about 10am), then nothing. They want to do a CT Scan, to see what this lump was. In order to do this scan they need to sedate her (she cannot move at all during the scan), so she needs an empty stomach. The scan was set for 2pm on Tuesday 11/18. At about 1pm, another surgeon comes in and says…cancel the scan, prepare for surgery. He has Chad and I both feel the lump, where we can feel that it is soft in the middle. This means there is liquid in there to drain. This is good; as they now are sure it’s just a swollen lymphnoid that needs a little help. And this means the antibiotics she has been on are doing their job. The surgeon did explain that there is no real explanation as to why this happened. Sometimes our bodies just cannot fight off bacteria and this is what happened to Sydney. So she is scheduled for surgery at 530pm. She is to remain off foods and liquids until then. Poor kid, she has had anything to eat since the night before.

At 520pm, we head down to the OR. They go through everything with us, to assure us what they will be doing. Basically, they will make a small incision on her lump, about a 1/2 inch long. They will then drain the puss out of it, and if there are any pockets within the lump, make sure they drain as well. Then they will pack the incision with gauze, so it can absorb any more puss that may be in there. The whole procedure took about 15 minutes, then she went to recovery for about 45 minutes. Before they took her, they gave her some medicine, via IV, that made her “drunk” like. It helps keep her calm when they take her and with this medicine she doesn’t remember them even taking her from me. This was hard to watch, she was so out of it. Sitting there in the family room was also hard. Luckily for us, a friend stopped by and kept our minds off it a bit. We were unable to see her until she was out of recovery. But then she recognized me immediately and wanted nothing but me holding her. We headed back up to the room, where I held her for about 2 hours. She had a bottle, then 2 hours later another bottle, poor kid was starving. She then went right to sleep. She would have slept all night, but the dang IV in her foot kept getting kinked so her machine kept going off. I think at about 2am, we both finally slept for about 4 hours straight.

The next she was in good spirits, no temp and had no side effects from the surgery, so the doctor said we could go home that day. But, they wanted us to wait until the results came back from her surgery…just to make sure nothing showed up. They all came back negative, which was great.

All in all, it was a good experience. Not that I’d want to do it again. But the doctors, staff and especially our nurses were wonderful. Trying to keep an active infant in a cage like crib for 2 full days is not easy. Sydney stayed home with Grandma Karen on Thursday. We thought it might be best if we have her home 1 more day, then she can return to daycare.

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts, prayers, support and most of all…all the help we received during this time. We are very fortunate to have such great families and friends in our lives!!!

Now, we only hope 2009 brings us much better luck with hospitals and ER’s. We’ve spent even time in them in 2007 and 2008, we should be good for a while.

Keeping Sydney busy, so she didn't remember she has had nothing to eat all day!
Right after surgery...looks a little out of it
Her new friends that she got from Grandma Shelley, Grandma Karen and Daddy's work. She just got her IV's taken out and was told she can go home...a good time for all of us!!!

Not Just an Ordinary Sunday

The day started off like any other day, when the girls woke at 630am. Daddy was getting ready to leave for the Viking/Packer game. I, along with Grandpa Mike and Grandma Elaine who were in town for the weekend, were getting the girls up for the day. Kendall was her usual fun loving self, full of smiles and getting into everything. Sydney on the other hand was a bit sluggish and just wanted to cuddle. She’d had a temperature since Thursday and had been cuddly and a bit whining here and there as well. But she was eating and for the most part sleeping fairly well. She’d get up and play here and there, but then take a break to cuddle. We thought it was a sign of teething as both girls have had teeth coming in recently.

On Sunday she didn’t seem to have much interest in playing at all, but did eat well. As the morning progressed I noticed that when she turned to her left that she turned her entire body, as if her neck was stiff. I asked my dad and Elaine if they noticed it as well, and they did. They both also indicated she felt warm and was obviously not feeling 100%. After they left I just kept a close eye on Sydney. And as the morning went on, she seemed to get more whining and cry much more. Every time she seemed to move or I moved her, she’d cry in pain. At one point I had her sitting on my lap and decided to rub her neck, since she seemed to have a stiff neck. When doing this I felt a large lump, about an inch long, on her right side. And when I put pressure on it, she would scream in pain. This is when I started to get worried. I ended up giving her some more Tylenol, and giving them lunch, then laid them both down for a nap.

I wanted to see what the internet said with her symptoms, and what were the first 2 things that popped up…Cancer and Meningitis. Now I was really nervous. I sat there for a bit thinking, should I call the Emergency Nurse or not? Am I over thinking this? Then after some thinking, I went with my gut and called the nurse. They said she didn’t have a temperature that I should be super worried about, but didn’t like the sound of the lump on her neck along with the stiffness. They told me to take her in today to the ER and have her checked out by a Pediatric Doctor.

So here I’m sitting at home along with both girls sleeping. I call Chad, so is at the game, no answer. Leave him a message to call me immediately. He gets back to me and says I’m on my way home. But here’s the dilemma…he doesn’t have the keys as our friends who are sitting in a different section have them and he cannot get a hold of them. But then he starts thinking that he probably shouldn’t drive. So he decides he needs to take the train to the Mall of America and have me pick him up from there. Luckily my mom is sitting next to him and says, let’s go. So they both take off, leaving a message with our friends that they had to leave and take Sydney to the ER. I’m sure this was not a pleasant message for them to hear.

I then wake the girls up and load them into the car and start heading up to the Mall of America to pick them up. I’m on 35E and all of a sudden I see red lights flashing behind me. Yup, on top of it all, I’m getting pulled over. The trooper walks over to the car and says, do you know how fast you were going. I immediately start crying, Kendall is yelling at me for waking her up (yeah she has started talking back to us already), Sydney is crying because she doesn’t feel well and the trooper just looks at me. I proceed to say, I need to get my baby to the ER, she has a high temp, but I need to pick my husband up and I’m just rambling. He asks for my license, and registration, takes some notes and tells me to watch the speed and get her to the ER. What a GREAT trooper!!!

Fast forward, we are at the ER. They start poking and prodding Sydney. They want to test her for everything…strep, white blood count, cancer, you name. The poor girl cried so much and was burning up. They finally give her a high dose of Motrin, which knocked her out and she took a little nap as I held her.

Three hours later, the doctor finally came in. All her test came back normal and it was determined she had a viral infection in her Lymphoid, which was inflamed. Both of our hearts did stop when he indicated they did test for Leukemia. This is what Chad’s dad passed away from. We were happy to find out that she is okay. Sydney was too as she reached out for the doctor at one point to shake his hand. She never does this, as she has a fear of strangers. We were tired but relieved.

We were sent home with instructions to give her Tylenol and Motrin. In a few days I’m to go to our Pediatrician to have the lump looked at to make sure it is decreasing in size.

On another note, it was a good thing that Grandma Shelley came with us. She kept Kendall occupied in the waiting room. From what we hear, she was entertaining all the people there and was being a very good sport about the whole thing! Thanks Kendall and Grandma Shelley.
What a day…you think it’s going to be a nice calm day at home with the girls and then all of this happens. We are just happy that she is okay. And I hope we never have to visit an ER again!!!

Trick or Treat

Even though the girls were a bit young to be going door to door this year for Halloween, they still looked the part. We had some hand me downs from Chad’s sisters that we used for the girls. We had ourselves a dinosaur and a pumpkin. The dinosaur went to Kendall as she is known to roar for us. It’s was a perfect fit for out little dinosaur. Sydney played the part of our little pumpkin.

Daycare had a little Halloween party, so the girls were dressed up the entire day. They were called, Dino and Pumpkin by all the kids at daycare.

First Steps

We have this toy at home that girls can ride or if adjusted; they can push and walk behind it. Occasionally I will pull it out and adjust it so the girls can attempt to walk behind it. Usually they will push it, then fall as they haven’t quite figured out how to move their feet. Or they just stand and play with the gadgets on it. Well last night Sydney decided to go for a stroll. We had her pushing and walking behind it from our living room down the hall to their bedroom. We’d then turn it around for her and she’d head back. She did about 5 or 6 laps. It wasn’t at all graceful, but it sure was exciting for Mommy and Daddy to see. She would fall occasionally, but pull herself back up and keep on going. It wasn’t necessarily a straight line either. I bet she’ll be walking on her own very soon!

After Sydney was tired from all the excitement we put Kendall up to it. She just stood there, looking at us and smiling. I’m sure in her head she was thinking…”look at me, I’m such a big girl standing here all on my own.” That’s about as much as she did. But, she seems to be a week or 2 behind Sydney on things, so I wouldn’t be surprise if we see Kendall taking a stroll down the hall in the next coming weeks.

Mommy's Girl...Daddy's Girl

It’s funny how kids tend to be closer to one parent over the other. In the beginning I’d say both girls were definitely Mommy’s girls. As they have grown, that has changed. Sydney is by far a Daddy’s girl and Kendall is by far a Mommy’s girl.

I started realizing it last week when I picked the girls up from daycare. When I walk in the door, both girls give me huge smiles and are happy to see me. I still get this, but from Sydney when it’s time to leave she gets upset. She does not want to leave and cries. At first it really pulled at my heart, but as she continues to do this, I realize she is having fun and wants to stay and play. As soon as I get her in the car and then home, she is just fine and is all over me when we get home…wanting hugs and kisses. Kendall on the other hand, she is super excited to go home and be with me. I guess you could say this is a good thing as it shows me how much they like daycare.

When Chad gets home at night, Sydney wants nothing but Daddy. She’d rather him hold her, she’d crawl to him before me. She is definitely Daddy’s little girl. Kendall is completely the opposite. I guess you could say this is good, we each get one. I wonder if it will stay this way, or if this will change again??? I guess only time will tell!!!

10 Month Update

The girls are now 10 months old and are getting so big. The other night after we put the girls to bed, Chad and I were sitting in the living room, watching some TV. The thought of last year came to me…I was doing pretty well at this point in time in my pregnancy. But in the evenings I was tired. I remember getting home from work, changing into comfy clothes, sitting in the lazy boy with my feet up as they were starting to get swollen and napping until it was time to go to bed. I did pretty well throughout the entire pregnancy, but I was tired come evening. It’s funny to think about last year and see where we are at this year.

In the last month, the girls have changed so much…

They are both crawling every where. It’s kind of cute, if one crawls away the other may not follow right away, but eventually she will head in the direction of her sister. So most times, if you know where one is, the other is right there as well. It must be a twin thing.

They are both pulling themselves up to their feet.

They fight over things. For some reason the other sister always has the better toy, even if there are 2 of them to play with. They will crawl over to their sister and steal it right out of their hands. They’ve also been know to push the other sister out of the way, to get at something. Oh, and they will even crawl on top of one another to get at something. We laugh now when it happens, but I’m sure one day it will drive us nuts.

They both have teeth coming in, which makes giving them a variety of table food so much easier. If we go out to eat, it’s great to put them in high chairs and give them a little of what you are eating. They have great hand/mouth coordination, so feeding themselves takes a lot off mommy and daddy. The best thing, they are down to 4 bottles a day of formula…this is the best. As of the first of the year we hope to be done with formula and move them to whole milk, which can be given to them with each meal.

We have also been working on the sippy cup. They do really well with bringing it to their mouth and drinking it. But they have to suck really hard to get anything out of the cup, with that they get too much in their mouth and tend to spit some of it out.

They both have been talking a lot. Kendall has been talking the most, with her da da da. But she also makes the funniest sounds. I cannot even begin to explain how they sound, but at times you wonder if she is a dinosaur, alien or some other type of animal. She has started to mimic me a bit. The other day she dropped something and I said, uh oh. Kendall proceeded to say it then and has ever since. Sydney has not done this yet, but she is all about her da da da.

Chad and I have been trying to teach them more in sign language, which they both do. Now, do they really understand what they are doing???? I’m sure with time they will!!! Just like the word no, believe me they know what that word means!

We are having so much fun with them and cannot wait to see what other new things they discover in the next couple months!
